How much does an MOT cost in Glasgow?

The MOT test fee has a legal maximum, but the real cost is whatever the car needs to pass. Here's how the numbers work, and how to keep the total reasonable.

In short:The maximum MOT fee for a car is £54.85, but garages can charge less. Repairs are priced separately and aren't capped by the test fee. Ask which items are needed for the retest and which are just advisories.

The test fee is a ceiling, not a target

DVSA sets a maximum fee of £54.85 for a car MOT. Many independent garages charge less — ours starts from £35. The fee covers the test itself, not repairs.

A cheap advertised MOT isn't a promise the car will pass. What matters is whether the garage explains the failure sheet clearly and quotes only what's needed.

What repairs commonly add

The cost after a failure depends on the defect. As rough guidance for an independent garage:

  • Bulbs or wiper blades: often £20–£60 fitted
  • A tyre: commonly £80–£200 depending on size
  • Front brake pads: often £120–£250 per axle
  • Suspension links or bushes: quoted after inspection

How to keep the total sensible

Do the easy checks before the test: lights, tyres, washer fluid, wipers and number plates. A blown bulb is cheaper to fix now than as a failed test plus a second appointment.

If the failure list is long, ask us to split it into 'needed for the retest' and 'worth doing later'. You never have to authorise everything at once.

Questions

Is the MOT fee the same everywhere?

No. £54.85 is the maximum; garages set their own price below it. Compare the total, including any retest.

Can I drive a car that failed?

Not if it has a dangerous defect. For other failures there are limited exceptions for driving to a pre-booked repair. Check before you move the car.
